What is CAPOSUD?

Project CAPOSUD deals with the production, promotion and circulation on a national scale of an independent and informative two-monthly magazine, published in Italian and focused in particular on three areas of interest:

1) International Politics

2) Cooperation & Human Development

3) Peoples and Cultures

Topics related to these areas will be discussed with a special attention to the Developing Countries (DC).

The correspondents of the magazine will be exclusively local (i.e. from DC): usually professional journalists, who, thanks to their analytical voices, are no doubt authoritative experts on their own realities as seen “from within”; voice, however, will be given to common People too, the very ones who have a daily and first-hand experience of Politics and are repositories of the Culture of their own Countries.

Why CAPOSUD?

Unfortunately, information about the DC in Italy heavily relies on the big press agencies of the “North”, on the employment of journalists of the “North” and on the – often one-sided – interpretation of the realities of these countries given by international governmental or non-governmental organizations. In Italy, moreover, the number of people who can speak a foreign language is still low if compared to other EU countries, and the habit of watching satellite TV is not so popular. This means that for many people information comes only from the national media. In addition, journalists from DC that work in Italy are very few.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

- To inform the Italian public about the realities of DC from an alternative point of view, that is, through in-depth articles written exclusively by local journalists and translated into Italian by a network of voluntary (but professional) translators;

- To promote a culture of integration between the Italian people and those of the “South” of the world by means of a direct understanding of the latter’s point of view thanks to local correspondents (no filter along the “South-North” axis of information);

- To stimulate improvements of the International Cooperation for Development that pay more and more attention to the needs of civil societies in DC thanks to an improved mutual understanding;

- To offer tools of research and reflection on the topics mentioned above that are high-level but free from unnecessary technicalities.

ADDED VALUES

- A reversal of perspective in the information about the “South” of the world provided in Italy;

- Independence of the magazine and of its local correspondents; cross-cultural nature of contents and journalistic sources.

To achieve such aims, the editorial staff is creating a network of high-level correspondents: to be “high-level” means not only to be able to provide valuable contents in a strictly journalistic sense, but also means to understand the social purposes behind Caposud and share the values animating the project.

Features of the articles

- For issue no. 0 of the magazine, in both electronic and paper format, the staff welcomes articles on topics suggested by the local correspondents themselves within one of the three areas of interest mentioned above (International Politics, Cooperation & Human Development, Peoples and Cultures). The use of a very simple writing style is strongly encouraged, so that articles can be understood by a public of non-specialists too. Abbreviations and technical terms should always be clearly explained. Maximum length of articles is 3600 characters (spaces included); for reportages 7000 characters (spaces included). Interviews may be proposed; remember, however, that the aim of the magazine is to get to the bottom of problems through in-depth reports, not to act as an echo of the opinions of public personalities: choose your interlocutors carefully!

- The use of non-copyright photographs to accompany the text is strongly advised: images too are expected to come from local journalists and not from western news agencies;

- Authors will take full responsibility for the content of articles (articles will be signed);

- We encourage the circulation of free information having a wide-ranging critical spirit, because we believe in the intellectual honesty ensured by our local correspondents;

- The editorial staff will attend to the translation into Italian of all articles selected for publication. Journalists who can submit articles in Italian (because they either speak it or can turn to reliable translators) are encouraged to see to it on their own;

- Since the magazine’s editorial staff consists of volunteers (young journalists and photo-reporters), articles will not be remunerated, but great visibility and the golden opportunity to participate in a highly innovative project in the Italian publishing world are guaranteed.

The success of this project depends on the response of the reading public; the editorial staff will therefore attend to all aspects related to the production, promotion and circulation of the magazine. Nevertheless,

the involvement of local correspondents is fundamental:

let us change together the perspective of the information coming from your Countries!
